Helen Wintrob, Ph.D. is a Licensed Psychologist, Certified School Psychologist and Licensed teacher.  She completed her B.A. at City College of New York, her M.A. at the New School for Social Research and received her Ph.D. from Temple University.  She is a graduate of the Ackerman Institute for the Family and the N.Y.U. Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy  and  Psychoanalysis. For 15 years she was the co-director of the Child Behavior Research Unit at the State University of New York / Health Science Center of Brooklyn.

Dr. Wintrob is currently studying the Orton-Gilllingham Method of remedial reading, which is a multi-sensory approach to the treatment of dyslexia. She is a professional member of Everyone Reading.  Helen is a member of the Adoptive Parents Committee where she frequently presents, and is a member of the Little Red School House / Elisabeth Irwin Adoptive Parents Committee.

Dr. Wintrob has had a long standing interest in the relationship of nature and nurture.  In the 1980's when we were often at the brink of nuclear war she did research and presented on the Psychological Implications of Preparing for Nuclear War. While she believes that there are many problems that have an organic basis including learning disabilities, ADHD, dyslexia, emotional issues and physical challenges, she thinks that children in these families require specialized parenting. Her training in family therapy as well as her research on hyperactivity and conduct disturbance make her particularly attuned to the parenting such children require.

Dr. Wintrob has observed that the struggles people confront in the 21st Century have a profound impact on their everyday lives. In this regard, she is particularly attuned to the variety of ways people approach life related to race, class, gender, age, sexual orientation and family construction. She easily gets to the heart of the problem and collaborates with patients to develop stragegies that work for them.
